Why spatial projects stall without a GIS team

You can usually see the problem clearly. Sites that need comparing, or data arriving in a format nobody can use. What is hard is specifying the work. Writing a brief for spatial data means knowing which datasets exist, what state they are in, and which of them will actually answer your question. That knowledge is the thing you were trying to hire for in the first place.

So the project goes to a software vendor instead, and the demo is convincing. Then real data goes in and the gaps show up. The platform was never the missing piece. Getting the data into a state worth querying is the work, and it is the part nobody demos.

How a project runs

We start from the rough version. You describe the outcome you need, we work out what data it depends on and whether that data exists. If the honest answer is that your question cannot be answered with what is available, you hear it before the budget is committed rather than after.

This work usually arrives late and against a fixed date. A planning window, a grid connection, a funding round, an investor milestone. We scope to that date and deliver in sprints against it, because a piece of analysis that lands after the decision was made is worth nothing regardless of how good it is.

What you get at the end is yours and documented. The database schema and the processing steps, with the reasoning behind the decisions written down. Your people can run it and change it without calling us. We are not trying to become a dependency.

Where we've done this

We are building the spatial data foundation for Atlas, Apexion's national commercial building intelligence platform for the UK solar market. That means processing 44 million UK building polygons into a queryable PostgreSQL/PostGIS database, integrated with environmental and planning constraint layers gathered from 317 local planning authorities. The system already handles complex spatial queries across the UK building stock in seconds.
